How it all Started

The M.A.C.E Truck Canopy Concept introduces a different way to achieve a multiple functional truck top cover facility to your wagon!

The invention as defined in my patent no. 1820879.3 came about after I purchased a truck and found on numerous occasions a different type of canopy would have suited certain scenarios. After purchasing three types of canopy to satisfy this requirement, it became apparent that a more versatile arrangement might be feasible and so started to investigate means for making an adaptable canopy such that it was modular in its configuration.

A modular construction has created the following opportunities;-

  • A versatile base frame which could accommodate many types of canopy
  • The option to have a retractable canopy
  • The option to have a modular hard-top canopy
  • All kinds of geometries for hard-top panels
  • To make the hard-top easily stowable
  • To make installation and removal of a hard top a one-person operation
  • To provide fixing points for accessories such as flood-lights and storage racking
  • To be able to install, change or remove the canopy while away from base
  • Easily replace damaged panels
  • Easily remove a roof segment to carry taller loads

Design Experience

My background has helped this project evolve since I’m a design engineer with an MSc in Engineering Design studied at Loughborough University. I also have CAD and 3d printing facilities, both of which were used extensively in the development phase up to this date.

I believe my working within the Formula 1 and Aerospace industry for the whole of my career has provided sufficient background and contacts to achieve a sound design. This is based upon practicality, longevity, robustness, aesthetics, safety and environmental considerations to take the concept to the next level - a working prototype for on the road usage!

Evolving the Concept

As you might have seen already this website is designed to provide a platform for customer feedback. As a Designer, it is important to seek a reality check by trying to engage with as many interested parties to establish the demand to take this concept from prototype through into full production.

I have plenty of history recorded for this project with many photographs to provide the stage developments. For those wishing to seek more information I’m happy to discuss the project in more detail.

If there is a supplier or manufacturer of truck tops or similar that wishes to enhance their product range, I would be happy to discuss potential opportunities.

The information provided here is intended to allow understanding of the concept and provide an opportunity for feedback. Ultimately the website aims to realise how many people might be interested in the idea or simply wish to make a comment or ask further questions.

Thus far the project has seen the following phases;-

  • Phase 1 Used a wooden platform to represent the pick up tub profile
  • Phase 2 Purchased a VW Amarok tub for the benefit of improved mock-up trials
  • Phase 3 Transferred the mock up to a VW pick up truck
  • Phase 4 Engaged marketing company for marketing boards
  • Phase 5 Applied for Patent (now granted no. 1820879.3)
  • Phase 6 Built working proto-type
  • Phase 7 Approach industry

Since mid-2021 the prototype has been undergoing road trials for both modular and retractable canopy types.

The project is now at phase 7.
